A Dancing Mindfulness Class
Sanctuary is an improvisational dance class that supports self expression and awareness via mixing mindfulness with movement. Our bodies are these beautiful, intelligent vehicles we travel in but we spend most of our time in our heads - worrying, judging, plotting and the like. This class is an invitation to leave our minds for a while and drop deep into our bodies, our hearts and our souls. Through guided improvisational movement, through inspired musical support, we learn to listen to our bodies and we give ourselves permission to move our bodies exactly how they need to be moved. There is no need for any prior dance experience. There is no right way to move in this class; your dance is as unique as you are. You will gain trust in your intuition and learn to listen to your body in new ways. This class is for all sizes, shapes and physical abilities. The class is a safe and fun movement journey that explores emotional, physical and spiritual presence.

FAQ about Sanctuary
So, there is no choreography?
This is correct. This is not like your average dance class. The moves are all improvisational. You will be guided by the instructor and given prompts to assist your dance. The music will change over the length of the class and the music will be your guide and inspire your movement. This class is a form of dance commonly known as conscious dance which includes a number of different flavors such as 5 Rhythms, Soul Dance, Open Floor, Dancing Freedom and Dancing Mindfulness.
What does this look like?
See the above video from a small class we held in the studio. I encourage you to take a look at other videos online such as this one from a 5 Rhythms class. While we are not teaching 5R, it will give you a taste of what conscious dance looks like.
What is Mindfulness and how is it part of the class:
Mindfulness is awareness cultivated by paying attention in a sustained and particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally. We will use the central tenets of mindfulness as anchors to guide our dance. These are: non-judgement, curiosity, beginners' mind, gentleness, and of course the breath.
What should I wear?
Great question. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in - similar to what you might wear to a yoga class. It is recommended that you dance barefoot or. you can get half soles to protect your feet or lyrical dance shoes. Sock feet will most likely be too slippery and not safe.
Is this class for me?
If you love to dance, then yes. If you love self-exploration and self-discovery, then yes. If you love self expression then likely yes. All it requires the first time is a bit of open mindedness to trying something new.
Do I need to be in shape for this class?
No. You move at your own speed and pace and you will be supported to honor your physical and emotional limits. The class can be a great opportunity for exercise. It can be quite a workout!
Will I be dancing with other people like a partner?
It's possible but not required. Many people will dance alone and there might be times where we work with partners or in large groups. You always have the option to opt out of any dance.
What is the class fee and how do I sign up?
The cost is $15 per class. You can also take advantage of our Fall Special - $40 for your first 4 classes. To sign up, go to our schedule, find the day of the class and click Sign Up.

Sanctuary runs the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month. It starts October 25th. Class is from 7 pm to 8:15 pm.
